Is a certain language better than another???And why?
HI everyone,my name is Achraf.I'll be 33 june 22nd.It is very interesting to see that many languages in your profiles,it is actually impressive to see individuals with such wonderfull talents.I took a couple classes in translation while I was in college. My major is english linguistics. My mother tongue is arabic,I am fluent in French(writen & spoken),I speak Spanish very confortably,I can converse a little bit in Italian and lately I have been learning japaneese.(for that latter,I am using this pimsler's language learning system)..basic japaneese ofcourse. My question is:Do you feel drawn to a certain language more than others? And why?In other words,do you think that a language is pretier ,smoother,nicer,better,or...than others?
Hi Achraf! Finally something worth to speak about... My mother tong is Portuguese. My graduation is translation English-Portuguese; German-Portuguese, the reverse in both languages as well. Also,I can have a conversation in Spanish. So, let us take Spanish as an example. The sound of the words in Spain is more aggressive than in Cuba! In Cuba the words gain rhythm, are smoother, it becomes a pleasure learning it and speak it.. However, I prefer English to Spanish, maybe because I feel more comfortable with it! I've been learning English since I was 10 years old.. I can say that English is almost my mother tong!! One of the reasons that lead me to learn German was the difficulty that was implied in it... Everybody around me was always saying that German was to difficult to learn. I prove them the contrary! But I find Spanish much more prettier language than German! Why? I cannot explain! That is one of the mysteries of the language....
Hi Achraf. It is interesting that certain languages "attracts" us more than others. I always wondered, just like you, why is that. My mother tongue is Slovene, but I speak fluently Italian, English and Spanish. But I was learning also German for 4 years in the Secondary school, and I don't like it, and French at a course in a former University, where I studies Italian. And I started to learn Portuguese for romantic reason. I can say that in each language I feel different and I use them for different purposes. Italian and English for my job (I work as a translator), I use Spanish to talk with my friends from South America, and use English to write science papers. I find French terribly romantic, for example, and chic. Italian is to me my second language and I think a lot in it. Spanish is to me also very important, I like traveling in Spanish speaking countries, and it makes me feel "at home" in some way. But Slovene for me is the language I use to fulfill forms and arrange documents in my country.
Wow!!!thank you so much, janja, that is exactly what I meant when I talked about language choice and why....very impressive, your repertoire of languages.By the way,how do you say thank you in slovene????
